Tony Adams has secured West Ham defensive midfielder Hayden Mullins for an undisclosed fee on a three-and-a-half year contract, while the Blues boss has also added FC Porto attacking midfielder Pele on loan until the end of the season.

Mullins has fallen out of favour at Upton Park under manager Gianfranco Zola, but was an integral part of the Hammers side until the Italian’s arrival.

The Blues manager feels his team were outbattled and outplayed by Championship side Swansea on Saturday – and that is why their defence of the title they gloriously lifted last May has ended in failure.

Adams’ men delivered an abject first-half display at Fratton Park, conceding both of the goals in their 2-0 defeat.

That gave them a mountain to climb and they couldn’t drag themselves back into the game, despite throwing everything at the visitors.

The on-loan Liverpool winger showed plenty of promise for his new club – especially in the second half as he switched from a central role to return to his more favoured position on the right flank to deliver a succession of inviting crosses.

But Pennant insists he will improve with more games under his belt to improve his sharpness after last playing first-team football for Liverpool way back in October.

The Blues manager has taken steps to slam concerns James is facing a period out of action ahead of tomorrow’s FA Cup fourth-round clash with Swansea.

Those fears emerged after Harry Redknapp said the England international is carrying a knee injury.

Redknapp revealed he had been told by the 38-year-old he was being hampered by the problem and believed he would be sidelined.

But Adams promised James does not need an operation after having an injection last week.

Former Blues boss Harry Redknapp – who led Pompey to Cup glory last season – has come under criticism for admitting he will field a weakened side for Spurs’ Cup clash at Manchester United so his side can focus on league survival.

But Kaboul, who is set to retain his place in central midfield for Pompey’s fourth-round clash with Swansea City tomorrow, is adamant the Blues will not follow suit, despite far from being out of the relegation picture themselves.

The executive chairman has already kick-started Pompey’s January recruitment drive with the capture of the Liverpool winger until the end of the season.

Nugent netted his maiden Premier League goal in the 1-1 draw at Spurs on Sunday, but could now find himself back on the bench for Saturday’s FA Cup clash with Swansea City.

The former Preston striker has started the past four games for the club on the right-hand side of Adams’ preferred 4-5-1 formation and has improved with every outing in an unfamiliar position.

But although Pennant is the more natural winger, Adams was full of praise for the hard-working Nugent, who has battled back into the first-team picture under the new manager.
